The Beginning

We heard about this case 5 years after it occurred. But it doesn’t matter. As someone said quite wisely, “Ufologists aren’t news reporters” and a case can be very interesting regardless of the date it took place.

As in most investigations we have performed, it has been our dear friend and colleague Joaquín Mateos who learned of the event, got in touch with the witnesses and arranged an interview for Saturday, 9 September 1978. For reasons beyond our control, we could not make it to the indicated spot at the arranged time and the witness went off to the cinema with his wife. We had to wait two hours to talk to him, but we believe it was well worth it.

Finally, comfortably seated, we began talking to the witness of this incredible event, and recorded the interview on magnetic tape. Once the necessary playbacks were made to prepare this report, we have taken two things into consideration:
1) We are in favor of presenting the story in the first person, as it seems “livelier” and more interesting to the reader if done that way, and
2) Due to the multiple linguistic expressions and the peculiar figures of speech employed by our rural folk, which are barely understandable elsewhere in the country, we have thought it prudent to make the report in the 3rd person to facilitate understanding, and abiding by the statements obtained, of course.

The Area

Gerena is a town in the province of Seville, where UFO sightings are rather common. We are completely unaware of what causes this. Perhaps the community has a certain attraction, or it could be a hypothetical “obligatory thruway” by these objects (or whatever they are) or perhaps (as a good friend has remarked) they are attracted by the activities of UFO research groups in the area. Who knows? Whatever the truth, many people in this town have seen UFOs, from the more “normal” cases to the truly mind-bending ones.
Gerena is 30 kilometers northwest of Seville. The Seville-Extremadura-Madrid Highway is located some 5 kilometers to the east.
The event we are going to describe took place some 3.5 kilometers in the direction of this highway, near the country home known as “El Esparragal”. It is a cropland area, relatively plant, with a few hills on its periphery. The witnesses were working, in fact, at a cotton field in the area.

The Witnesses

A total of 7 people witnessed this event. We have only been able to locate one, Mr. Antonio Fernández González, married (single at the time of the incident), some thirty-odd years old. According to this man, the other people with him that evening were: David González, Francisco Barrera, Antonio Palomo (deceased), all of them residents of Gerena. He only remembers two of the others, called Francisco and Ventura (two of them lived in Las Pajanosas and the other in Guillena, towns adjacent to Gerena). Our colleague Joaquín Mateos knows the witnesses who live in Gerena very well, and assures us they are very earnest and trustworthy.

The Event

It all happened on a Saturday in mid-August 1973 between 3:30 and 4 in the morning. The event has been burned in Mr. Fernández’s memory and with good reason.

The seven witnesses were irrigating the cotton with sprinklers along with seven other people working in a distant sector of the plantation. They worked in teams and their work shift ran from 8:00 in the evening until 8:00 a.m., a total of 12 hours. The first sprinkler shift took place between 8 and 10 p.m., and they left the country home at 2:00 a.m. once more to make a second sprinkling of the cotton until 4 a.m., approximately. Finally, around 8:00 a.m., they toured the plantation again to inspect the sprinkler lines to make sure none were stuck. That brought their shift to a close.

It was little over 3:30 a.m. that Saturday and our witness, accompanied by David González, was inspecting one of the sprinkler lines – a 300 meter-long one, unhooking it and changing the direction of the irrigation, each using their respective flashlights. These were large, powerful flashlights, fed with four batteries and producing a large beam of light. While one did the hooking, the other
provided illumination with the flashlight, and they alternated countless times.

As Mr. Fernández walked between the cotton on the highest part of the terrain, he saw a source of white light in the distance, coming down a slope. He stared at the light earnestly, and some 30 paces ahead (distance between one sprinkler and another) stood Francisco Barrera and David Gonzalez. He asked them if they had seen “that thing” and they replied affirmatively. It could have something to do with the hunters entering the area aboard their vehicles.

But our witness thought it was “too much light” for a car.

They continued working and glancing at the light. The sooner they finished their job, the more time they would have to rest until it was time to perform the last inspection at 8 a.m. – but the light source grew closer and they began to feel concerned. “That looks like bad news,” remarked one of the men. Our witness sat on the water pipe and they continued trying to find a satisfactory explanation for the light. “It’s coming closer and it’s not a car or a plane. It’s higher than a car and a plane isn’t going to fly so low at this time of night.”

By now all of them were very serious. Another companion, further away, wondered: “Do you think it’s one of those flying saucers people are talking about?”

“He had to say it!” Mr. Fernández told us. “A flying saucer. That’s exactly what it is. Can’t you see it?”

The light drew closer, its glow blinding those who looked upon it. Our witness, not knowing anything about “flying saucers”, prostrated himself on the mud between the cotton rows. His companions followed suit.

And the object flew right over them, very close to the ground.

It is hard to provide a chronological account of everything the witness told us in the interview, since he mixed in events that were done at the start with those that occurred toward the middle and the end. His nervousness, and the five years that have gone by, have not allowed us to coordinate one detail with the next. However, we will endeavor to present his overall statements.
The sky was completely clear. Stars were visible and only a waning moon lit the area. The unusual object appeared from the northwest, passing over the witnesses and heading toward Las Pajanosas (northeast) and returning flying over the frightened laborers.

The UFO was shaped like an eye or an inverted plate. Seen at a certain distance, it was completely round underneath, something they were able to attest as it passed only few meters above the witnesses.

According to Mr. Fernández, when the object was above him, he WOULDN’T LOOK (emphasis in the original – SC) and therefore did not see some red light sources it appeared to have on its lower section – a detail visible to Mr. David González, who was buried in mud a short distance from Mr. Fernández.

When the object pulled away, the called out to Antonio Palomo, who was farther away, to see if something had befallen him (the UFO had been suspended in the air for a few minutes over by his position) but Palomo would not answer. He was also buried in mud and couldn’t hear a thing, a fact they were able to ascertain later by looking at him.
David Gonzalez, who was the boldest, would lift his head when the object was practically overhead, hoping to see occupants or portholes. Our witness advised him not to do it, “or they’ll tear your head off”. The others couldn’t hear a thing. They were lying on the ground, covered in mud and water.

Whenever the UFO pulled away, they would stand up, turn on their flashlights and resume their chores, as they wanted to complete their work on the sprinklers as soon as possible to go and rest. They continued their task until the object returned to fly over them again. This situation repeated itself 4 or 5 times, with the observation lasting a total of 20 minutes.

The witnesses noticed that every time the object pulled away and they got up off the ground, there was a sort of white fog left in the area which kept them from even seeing the stars. This fog would vanish shortly after, reappearing every time the object made the same maneuver.

No strange odors were detected in the area (the cotton was treated with pesticides), or any heat or changes in temperatures.

The witnesses were greatly concerned and frightened. The object made a loud noise, comparable to that of a jet engine, although more muffled. Its light was tremendous, illuminating the entire field, and David told himself at a given moment: “We should take advantage of that light to change over the remaining sprinkler lines.”
The UFO’s final pass was shockingly low. So much so that one of the witnesses thought it would crush another worker who was farther away. The cotton’s height was around 60 centimeters (23 inches) and the object brushed right over it.

When asked about its size, Mr. Fernández told us: “Its circumference was a big as a bullring. It was enormous. I can’t tell you exactly how it was, but it was very large.”
According to our own investigations, the UFO’s diameter was some 35 meters (115 feet) – endless, when it’s only inches from your head. The UFO stopped for a while over a nearby fence, where Antonio Palomo and another co-worker from Las Pajanosas did their chores. As it pulled away amid the glow, Mr. Fernández noticed that the object had a metallic aspect. It finally vanished without the witness having been able to specify the direction it took, as he was concealed amid the cotton and when he looked up, he didn’t see the object again. Aside from the fright, the witnesses experienced no side-effects worthy of note.

They subsequently returned to the country home, waking everyone up to tell them what happened. They had to bathe with their clothes on in a water tank in order to get rid of all the mud covering their bodies and clothing. The 7-worker team, in another part of the farm, did not notice anything abnormal.

“I worked there some five or six years,” remarked the witness, “and never again had a similar experience. If I saw something far away, it wouldn’t scare me, but I never want to see it that close again.”

Sometime later, when David Gonzalez returned home on his motorcycle after seeing his girlfriend, he had an experience with another large unidentified flying object that blocked the road, keeping him from proceeding his journey. He dropped the motorcycle on the side of the road and ran back to his girlfriend’s house, and it seems that she was also able to see the object departing at a distance. This case was referred to us by Mr. Antonio Fernandez Gonzalez (although it was already known to us) since he found out what happened to his co-worker on the same night the event transpired.

Spain: UFO Chased By Two Jet Fighters (1977)

Spain: UFO Chased By Two Jet Fighters (1977)

The Witness

Name: Jose Chavez Jimenez
Age: 28
Marital Status: Single
Profession: Welder. Works at the Astilleros Españoles company in Seville
Address: Calle Comandante Castejón, 1- Gerena (Seville)

We had the impression that the witness was a very well-balanced person. He’s a countryman, rough, tied to the soil, who told us what happened in short, simple phrases, entirely sure about what he was saying, or in other words, he told us exactly what he saw as if it hadn’t the slightest bit of importance. He could’ve been telling us any commonplace event on the street. He felt no fear during his sighting of the phenomenon. He has no idea about what he saw, and [the same applies] to the UFO phenomenon.

There is another witness of this sighting, whom we have not interviewed, but according to Mr. Chavez, his companion “hadn’t had a good look at that thing”, and was therefore unable to recall the events in detail.

The Area

The time is late March 1977. The time is approximately 10:00 in the evening and the witness was hunting in the open field along with some friends. They were stalking “jabatos” (young wild boars) at a location some 3 kilometers distant from the Gerena-El Garrobo highway. There is a “cortijo” (country home) known as “La Mesa” two kilometers distant from where the hunters stood, owned by Mr. Lucas Acuña Tavares. The entire area is located approximately some 27 kilometers northeast of Seville. The hunters were somewhat stealthy and had spread out here and there, between the alders, holly oaks, mounds and weeds of this rough mountainous area. At one point, they were halfway down a mountain slope, facing a valley that extended beneath them.

It was a calm evening with entirely clear skies. The moon was waxing at an elevation of 45 degrees over the horizon, and behind our witness.

The Sighting

Mr. Chávez was stalking any young boar that might appear in the area that covered by his eyesight. Looking to the north, near the horizon, he saw a very bright, white star that didn’t hold his attention. It was no more than a star.

Concentrating on his endeavor, and after a certain time had elapsed, he looked at the light once more, ascertaining that it was moving toward him, but very slowly.

Somewhat curious at this point, and ascertaining that it was a machine rather than a star, he looked more closely at the white light, mindful of his prey, and noticed that the light became increasingly larger.

]

Around 23:30 hours, the curious light was virtually over his head and at a certain height. He was then able to see in full detail that it was a circular object with an apparent diameter equal to three times that of the full moon, with a source of white light in its center, having a size similar to 1/4th of its total diameter. Around this core, near the object’s edges, he was able to see a large number of small lights – red, green and other colors.

All of these lights were fixed, not intermittent, and cast no light whatsoever over the area occupied by our hunter. The brightness of the central light, of course, was greater than the surrounding lights, although these enabled Mr. Chávez to make out the object’s edges and become aware of its roundness.

The only thing that astonished the witness was the absolute silence with which the object traveled. Despite having practically overhead, he could not hear the least noise. He only heard the incessant barking of the dogs guarding the “La Mesa de las Vacas” country home some 2 kilometers southeast of his position. These dogs would continue barking for a long time, until Mr. Chávez and his companions gave up on their hunt around 24:00 hours.

Suddenly, they heard the deafening roar of jet engines. The witness turned around and saw the unmistakable lights of two jet fighters, flying low and closing swiftly on the place where the unknown object hovered. Given their location of origin (southeast), Mr. Chávez surmised that they came from Seville to “hunt down” the UFO. “They were on its tail,” as he would state during the interview.

Interested in knowing what the luminous object’s reaction would be, he stared at it and realized it was changing position. When the fighters were in range, the object sped away “edgewise” at a terrific speed, heading toward Portugal (west). It completely vanished from sight in two or three seconds.

The fighters followed the same course as the object, and shortly after, the witness saw them return, vanishing toward Seville. “There’s no doubt that they couldn’t catch the object,” Mr. Chávez thought.

Conclusion

We can attest to the fact that the witness of this unique sighting has not read anything at all about Unidentified Flying Object. “Those things don’t scare me,” he said. “If one ever comes close to me, I’m not planning to cut and run.” We would state that he has no idea at all about UFOs or the UFO question.

It is precisely because of his lack of knowledge on the subject that we deem two details in Mr. Chávez’s story to be important, along with the rest of his sighting: the barking of the dogs and the “edgewise” position of the UFO at the moment of extreme acceleration.

As any ufologist knows, animals have exhibited unusual behavior in the proximity of an unidentified flying object. We believe that there is no point in presenting any such case, as these are widely known to all.

With regard to the UFO’s vertical (or edgewise) position at the moment it accelerated, we are aware of other sightings in which this detail occurred. Ufology even has a few visual records, such as the photograph taken by Erich Kaiser in the Austrian province of Styria on 3 August 1954, where three objects can be seen traveling “edgewise” and in a straight line (Stendek magazine, No. 27, March 1977, pg. 16 and 17).

Neither can we vouch for the photo’s authenticity nor that of Mr. Chavez’s story. We only want to highlight the surprising coincidences…and that our witness does not seem to be sufficiently well-versed in the subject to imagine such methods of displacement.

Cryptozoology: Follow Up - "A Strange and Enormous" Four Meter Fish Washes Up on a Beach in Villaricos

The photo uploaded to Facebook by a beachgoer captured half the world's attention; the nature of the "critter" is still not known.

The photo of a strange creature uploaded by a beachgoer in Villaricos "went around the world" by means of the Facebook network, garnering a multiplicity of comments as it did so. The fact of the matter is that what is believed to be an enormous fish was found by a woman on Luis Siret beach in Villaricos. Civil Protection authorities in Cuevas del Almanzora assisted in removing the nearly 4-meter long "critter" from the water and immediately notified the Guardia Civil's SEPRONA agency as well as PROMAR (Programa en Defensa de la Fauna Marina - Sea Life Defense Program).

However, due to the advanced state of decomposition of the enormous "body", as PROMAR's Paco Toledano explained, "it's hard to know what we're dealing with. It's very decomposed and we cannot identify what it is. Perhaps we could learn something more from the bones, but to be precise, it would be necessary to perform a genetic analysis, which is very expensive, and who would pay for it. Anyway, we have submitted the information to colleagues with more experience and knowledge to see if they can tell us something more specific."

Yesterday morning the "fish" was no longer on the sand. "I would imagine it was buried somewhere," said Toledano, who explained that the sort of "horns" emerging from one side of the alleged fish "are not horns at all - they're bones that have fallen out of place. It's not a longhorn cowfish, that's for sure," he added humorously. The fact is that there have been many remarks about the provenance or origin of the creature, since according to Toledano, "never had a similar specimen been seen on the shores of Cuevas."

At first glance on the web, there were those who spoke of "a mutant fish", a "water dinosaur", or even sought a connection with the oft-mentioned subject of the Palomares nuclear bomb, given its proximity to these beaches.

And since thoughts are free, there were some who tied this "apparition" with the opening of the short film "Palomares Vive: El Terror Bajo las Aguas" (Palomares Lives: The Terror Beneath the Seas") which tells the story of the nuclear bombs from Palomares from a critical standpoint, reminiscing on the sci-fi cinema of the 1950s, and whose protagonist is a monster inspired on Fraga and his subsequent dip in the waters following the bombs being dropped.

It is said on Facebook about this short film, sharing the image: "Strange creatures begin to emerge from the seabed in Villaricos and Palomares, plutionium wreaks havoc, first giant fish, the mutant Fragas."

Spain: A High-Strangeness CE-3 in Huelva (1977)

Spain: A High-Strangeness CE-3 in Huelva (1977)
Report by J. Mateos, A. Moya and M. Filpo - Grupo GERENA

Location: Village of La Escalada, Almonaster la Real.

Ceferina Vargas Martín, 20, single, was on her way to visit her grandmother – who lived in a nearby village – following a trail along the edge of a stream. Suddenly, she felt a flash in her eyes from the stream, leading her to think it might be a piece of glass or a mirror in the water. She felt an instinctual urge to walk faster, yet something appeared to be slowing her down. After walking another 20 meters, she felt another flash aimed at her eyes – a white flash, similar in size to the light of a bicycle headlight and very unpleasant. Panicked, she felt her strength falter. When the source of light was extinguished, she noticed two figures standing four meters distant from her position. Both of them stood upright on the trail.

One of them was female and some two meters tall, with long, platinum hair down to her waist, large eyes and arched eyebrows, lacking a nose or with only two orifices. She was able to make out a moving line where the mouth should have been, yet never opening. [The entity] gave the impression of wanting to speak while gesticulating with its arms. It was clad in a long, dark-green tunic that flashed, as though made of tiny lights, with a round neckline from shoulder to shoulder and wide sleeves. The witness was unable to see if the figure had any feet, but noticed that it had a flat chest.

The male figure had similar features and remained motionless. It had short and somewhat unruly hair, and wore knee-length tunic – light brown and flashing – and was slightly shorter than his female companion at 1.70 meters. Ceferina described their faces as “repellent”, lemon-yellow in color.
Stunned, she lost consciousness shortly after sitting down on a rock. The entities remained indifferent to the witness’s presence. Upon returning to her village, she became aware of having lost her formal ID card and the crown of her wristwatch. Officers of the Guardia Civil combed the area and only found a few bus tickets belonging to the young woman. That night she awoke with a start, dreaming of insects. She was unconscious for approximately half an hour.

Spain: Policeman Reports UFO Phenomenon Along the Road to Gerena (1990)

Mr. Antonio Márquez, a resident of Gerena, member of the National Police on duty at a commissariat in Seville, kindly visited ufologist Joaquín Mateos Nogales to report the following:
“While travelling in my car to Seville from this community of Gerena to join the ranks, I witnessed something unusual at Kilometer 9 of the Gerena Road, at the crossing with the road to Extremadura. The time was 20:45 hours on the night of 6 February 1990. A brilliant, triangular-shaped OBJECT was some 40 meters to the right of the road, at an altitude of approximately 100 meters.”

According to the witness, it measured approximately 12 to 14 meters long, and within the triangle he could see several HEXAGONS of different colors, mostly green, yellow and blue, which differentiated the hexagons. At the time, the witness was afraid to stop, uncertain of how the OBJECT would react, as he explained. Two cars crossed his own vehicle at the time, but did not stop, and neither did he. When he reached the crossing with the road to Extremadura, 12 Km distant from Gerena, he went into a brick factory, somewhat nervously, and explained what he had seen to the person in charge.

Cryptozoology: Strange Creature Startles Swimmers in Villaricos.

Yesterday afternoon (08/15/13) a strange "carcass" measuring four meters long washed up on the Luis Siret Beach in the community of Villaricos. It could be a large fish, but in the advanced stages of decomposition. Once ashore, it was a source of amazement and remarks due to the novelty of the find. The first impression, and the photos circulating on the web, caused many to wonder if that creature belong to "the same species as the Loch Ness Monster". There was talk of a "mutant fish" and a series of humorous remarks.

The fact is that Proteccion Civil de Cuevas notified its colleagues at Promar in Pulpí: "We're monitoring the beaches during the summer. A lady found one part and we helped her retrieve the rest. We have no idea what it was. It really stank, as it was in the advanced stages of decomposition. Promar experts are trying to ascertain its nature," explained Maria Sanches, Coordinator of Civil protection in Cuevas.

Argentina: UFO Sightings in Fortín Tiburcio

Argentina: UFOs Over Fortín Tiburcio
The astonishing experiences of local residents.

It took place in a town some 38 kilometers from Junín: a place called Fortín Tiburcio, where local residents reportedly saw an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO). Similar eyewitness reports have been received for many years, but only a few days ago, several people saw lights that flared up and objects that they were unable to identify.
Ariel Cherchetti, 51, a former municipal delegate, is among the witnesses consulted by this newspaper. He described what he saw in the early hours of 20 July 2013 on the road he normally travels between Tiburcio and his home, 5 kilometers distant from the town.

“It Followed Me”

“A luminous object hovered over Tiburcio between the evening of 19 July and the early hours of 20 July. There were people celebrating Friendship Day at the club. They also saw it. In my case, I saw the object but on the road. It followed me a certain distance back to the field where I live. I didn’t seem like something terrestrial to me, due to the abilities it displayed. It was a very small device, really. I’m ashamed to tell you about it,” said Ariel, interrupting himself.

“The next day,” Ariel continues,” when I told my son what happened the night before, and how it made me feel, he told me: ‘But a ton of us saw it in Tiburcio! I saw it too.’ And then one starts talking in a group of friends, where there are seven or eight people, who discuss it and ask you what happened. Then someone pipes up and also claims having seen it, but is afraid to say so due to a fear of ridicule,” he noted.

“We believe that that night, in Tiburcio, over 100 people witnessed it. But shame kept us from reporting it, since we could have called the media to come and film it, given that it was visible between 23:00 hours and 0100 hours in the morning over town. It was seen not only by the locals, but by outsiders who happened to be in Tiburcio that evening. Some tried recording it with their cellphones, but they apparently ran out of batteries, or the charge was suddenly drained,” he said.

Description

According to the statement proffered by the witnessed, the “device” was a UFO. It wasn’t round, but winged, with a central dome and a short tail. It was a very small device. It looked like a little airplane but with a large dome, with lights at the end of the wings that faded away as they reached the center of the device. “Its color was leaden and it had spectacular flight capabilities. When I realized that it was an unknown apparatus, I drove my pickup truck [at a speed of ] 150 KMH on a dirt road, which is in good condition, thank God. The device zigzagged in front of me with incredible dexterity. It turned, ran over a high voltage line, gained altitude and then descended, like someone projecting a light, with amazing skill. That’s what makes me think it isn’t a terrestrial device, because there’s nothing from here that has that speed and those skills,” he described.

“When I got home, I didn’t put away the pick-up truck in the shed that’s 50 meters from home, but in the carport, which is right there. I got out and didn’t say a word. After a while, I told my wife about it, and she said: ‘let’s go out and find it!’ I told her, “No, leave it alone, don’t get involved with the unknown.” It scared me a great deal. I think the device hovered above the wilderness of our field,” he stated.

Other Witnesses

Aside from residents of Tiburcio, the alleged UFO was seen by others who happened to be in the town on the evening of 19 July and the morning of 20 July. Among them is Mauro Gallese, 31, a native of Asunción, who was accompanied by Javier Sanchez and other friends there and saw it.

In a conversation with Diario Democracia, Gallese said he was able to record it for a short while on the morning of 20 July while he stood a block away from the Club de Tiburcio. “We had just finished dinner, and we saw that white light, near the street, 50 meters from where we stood. I recorded it, but when I watched the video it was completely black, as if there was nothing there at all, and I’d been recording it for 20 minutes. We saw the light moving, running, as we got closer,” he said.

Police officer Horacio Artero, responsible for patrolling the rural areas of Tiburcio, told Diario Democracia that he had a unique experience back in April 2012. “I saw the light for only seconds,” said the officer. “In fact, when I saw it at a distance, I thought it was a motorcycle on the road near the pig farm. Then I turned around, and since I found it suspicious, lowered my speed and turned off my lights. Suddenly, I saw the light over my vehicle – a powerful white light, similar to what you see during welding, that illuminated only me from above. It lasted 4 or 5 seconds before turning off suddenly. I rolled down the window, but there was nothing up there. It wasn’t cloudy and there was no wind. Just a starry night.”

MEXICO: Another UFO Photographed Over the Popocatepetl Volcano

Majestic and imposing Popocatepetl, the Mexican volcano, has returned to the world's headlines as a result of a strange unidentified flying object having been photographed in its vicinity. The mountain, which has acquired notoriety since last year as a result of the multiple and enigmatic photo sequences of UFOs taken over its crater, is once more a mute witness to these anomalous phenomena. This time, a fixed camera from the "Webcamsdemexico" site, which monitors activity at "Don Goyo" - the mountain's nickname" - captured an object following an erratic trajectory.

Enthusiasts believe this is clearly a UFO, finding it hard to believe that an airplane or helicopter would perfomr such a maneuver. Skeptics, however, say that it is merely a "balloon" dragged by shifting air currents.

In spite of this, "Popo" has become world-famous on account of its high strangeness episodes. It all started when it kicked into activity last year. Once vulcanologists installed cameras to monitor it and advise civil authorities of any possible eruptions, multiple UFOs were seen entering and exiting its interior.

The two most notable cases occurred in October and November 2012 when an elongated object entered the volcano at high speed, emerging a few days later before a powerful earthquake took place. Popocatepetl has currently turned into a place of pilgrimage for several ufologists and saucer aficionados world over, who want to see these anomalies for themselves.
